The key to achieving and maintaining vibrant health and well-being hinges on your body being able to properly eliminate toxins & absorb nutrients. Anything that we put into our body can either be stored and assimilated, or assigned to waste and eliminated. For this process to work well, we need to take care of our bodies, inside and out!

Your gut is a very important component of this assimilation or elimination. It is responsible for good digestion and strong immunity, as well as for mental clarity and longevity. Our daily dietary choices and the challenging environment that most of us live in compromise the gut’s ability to function well. Detoxing can help the body to eliminate waste.

When we detox, we allow our body to begin the natural healing process, allowing our system to naturally rid itself of the toxicity that has built up in our cells, bloodstream and organs over many years. Regular detoxes support the body to restore healthy metabolic organ function, energy and vitality.

Detox programs can vary from a few days to a few weeks. We understand that it isn’t always possible to take time off to complete a detox cleanse, so we use a holistic approach to help you with a cleanse that is customised to you, your needs and your lifestyle. This way you will be able to start supporting your gut so that it can support your body and help you to cope with the demands and pressures of everyday life.

Like it or not, each and every one of us are susceptible to parasites and worms infecting our bodies on a daily basis. Parasitic infections are difficult to identify and avoid. We become hosts to parasites after ingesting their microscopic eggs. As shocking as it sounds, most humans actually carry parasites, with contamination often found in a number of everyday, seemingly harmless sources, including:

Water is a primary source of parasite infection for humans. Often water treatment methods do not kill all parasites present in lakes, dams and streams. Swallowing only a small amount of contaminated water can lead to a nasty infection. Parasitic infections, such as Giardia, are commonly contracted from contaminated water. Homes and establishments running on rain-water tanks are a high risk where no filtration system has been installed.

Other Humans

Parasitic eggs are easily spread from person to person and can sometimes remain alive for weeks without a host. Simply touching something that an infected person has handled after sneezing, or using the toilet can easily transfer the parasite. It is not uncommon to have whole families infected after one family member becomes a host.

Meat, improperly washed fruit and vegetables, or fruit and vegetables washed in contaminated water are other ways for parasite eggs to transfer to humans.

Pets and Animals

Pets carry a large number of parasites that can be transferred to humans. Petting your animals, being licked by them, making contact with their feaces, or being bitten by ticks and fleas, are all pathways that can spread parasites. Toxoplasmosis is an example of a parasite that is commonly transmitted from animals to humans.

Visiting exotic destinations can sometimes lead to bringing home more than you bargained for. Traveling can expose you to new parasitic infections via the methods listed above, as well as by coming into contact with people who have been traveling and who have perhaps become infected unawares.

Symptoms of parasitic infection

Symptoms of parasitic infection can be identifiable by common symptoms or be asymptomatic. Visible symptoms may include:

  • Stomach pains and cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas and bloating
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Skin conditions and allergies
  • Dehydration
  • Dizziness
  • Mood swings and anxiety
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Change in appetite
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Sexual and reproductive problems
  • Sleep disorders
  • Constipation

Types of infection

There are three main types of parasitic organisms that can lead to infection:

  • Protozoa, single-celled organisms including giardiasis that live and multiply within the human body;
  • Helminths which are multicellular organisms, often worms like the flatworm, tapeworm, ringworm and roundworm;
  • and Ectoparasites like mosquitos, ticks, fleas, lice and mites that live on the external surface of our bodies.
You may not know that you are infected

Blastocystis Hominis is a microscopic single-celled parasitic protozoa that can inhabit the human gastrointestinal tract. Many protozoa naturally occur in the digestive tract and are harmless and sometimes even helpful, but there are also some varieties that cause disease. People infected with Blastocystis can be asymptomatic. Some infected people do however experience digestive problems.

Preventing infections

You may not always be able to prevent infection, but you may be able to reduce your risk of exposure by following these guidelines:

  • Always maintain a high standard of personal hygiene. Wash your hands regularly, especially if you suspect you have come into contact with contaminated food, water or faeces.
  • Avoid cat litter and animal faeces
  • Wash and prepare food thoroughly, paying particular attention to recommended temperatures when cooking meat.
  • Avoid swallowing water in lakes, streams and dams.

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese healing therapy, developed to harmonise and promote health and wellbeing. With its name literally translating to mean ‘finger pressure’ Shiatsu is based on the theory of ‘Qi’ (pronounced ‘Chi’) along with principles of Chinese and Japanese medicine. Qi is the circulating life force and vital energy that flows throughout our bodies.

The human body consists of pathways where Qi flows. These energy channels are known as meridians chakras and they control and connect our body, mind and soul.

Traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine theory, teaches that energy should flow inside each meridian and be balanced. Uneven flow, or energy blockages can affect your emotions, mental clarity, your ability to heal and renew organs and tissue, causing overall malfunction and decay. The overall balance and harmony of Qi within each meridian is crucial in maintaining optimal health and well-being.

The Shiatsu Technique

Shiatsu uses finger pressure but also incorporates a range of techniques to apply therapeutic pressure over various parts of the body. The pressure varies and can be firm or light, using the palms, thumbs, elbows, knees and feet.

During treatment, your massage therapist will work along meridian energy lines to access the Qi and re-balance its flow. Shiatsu techniques stimulate blood circulation and lymphatic flow which has positive effects on your physical body and on your mental health.

Traditional Japanese Shiatsu treatment is given on a futon mat on the floor. You will be made very comfortable with blankets and pillows to support your body. It is best to wear loose, comfortable clothes. When incorporating complimentary therapies like moxibustion and cupping may require some clothing to be removed.

Using Shiatsu techniques, we integrate meridian therapy, point selection, moxibustion, cupping and corrective exercises to give your body the best opportunity to heal.

Through the use of Shiatsu and remedial massage, we release muscular tension and areas of energy and blood stagnation, so that circulation is restored and stiffness, inflammation and pain are not allowed to set in as long-term complaints. Restoring the body’s Qi and blood flow prevents aches and pains from becoming physical dysfunction and even illness. The practitioner works on the whole body as well as specific problem areas. While giving a treatment, the practitioner is constantly “listening” to your body and then acting upon this information to meet your needs, so that we can help you achieve holistic balance. We may spend time working on areas that you weren’t initially aware of as being connected to your symptoms.

Benefits of Shiatsu

Usually there are no negative side effects after a treatment, although some people may experience a rush of released emotions. People generally feel more balanced, relaxed and enjoy a sense of calmness. (source Shiatsu Therapy Association Australia).

Shiatsu affects the internal organs, muscles and joints, the endocrine system, the autonomic nervous system and has a profound effect on posture and improving joint mobility. It stimulates the lymphatic system and can leave you feeling tension free, relaxed and calm and energised at the same time.

Boasting both preventative and remedial effects, Shiatsu is commonly used to treat the cause and symptoms of aliments including; Migraines, Sciatica, Arthritis, Menstrual Pain, Insomnia, Stress, Anxiety as well as chronic shoulder, neck and back pain.

The emphasis of Shiatsu treatment is to support the body in re-establishing its ability to function in harmony, stimulating the immune system to protect itself against disease, and help you on the road to recovery. Regular maintenance shiatsu treatment is highly recommended as apart of ones self-care/wellness regime.

How these therapies work and why

We believe in blending the best Eastern and Western therapies in your treatment at the Body Balance Company. We will use the best combinations for your treatment, based on tailoring the therapy to your unique situation and needs.

Moxibustion is an ancient technique that has profound effects on your body’s circulation and physiology. It is a technique that incorporates burning the Ancient Chinese herb mugwort, and applying the heat therapeutically to acupuncture points and areas where pain manifests.

Cupping is similar to massage therapy because it also increases circulation and treats deep muscle tension and pain. It utilises special glass cups to create a gentle suction against your skin, which in turn promotes circulation and can even help fight off coughs and colds.

Spooning (Gua- Sha)

Spooning is a great therapy to increase circulation and release stagnation in your body. A therapeutic Chinese spoon or tool is used to lightly scrape the skin, to allow for the release of tension, stiffness and pain. Spooning can also help to fight off colds, flu and fever, as well as treat pain and stiffness.

Traditional Chinese Dietary & Lifestyle Advise

We apply the ‘Five Elements’ to dietary and lifestyle advise and use food as medicine to harmonise and balance the digestive system, liver and Kidneys. We will carefully assess your situation and can offer dietary advice to alleviate and improve digestive disorders, reduce excess phlegm and mucus, headaches, anxiety, stress, skin disorders and many others conditions.

Reflexology is massage of the feet that aims to promote wellness throughout the body. Modern reflexology is based on the principle that the foot has ‘reflex’ points that correspond to the body’s structures, meridians and organs. Reflexology can produce highly therapeutic results over a course of consecutive treatments.

When muscles and tendons become damaged or impaired, knotted and tense or immobile, our Massage Therapists can provide a therapeutic treatment that can be gentle or strong, deep or shallow, depending on what your body needs.

We treat the whole body at The Body Balance Company. Our massage therapy traces your aches and pains back to the original cause, so that we treat more than just your symptoms. We want to provide support so that your body can heal.

Massage therapy aims to treat the causes of musculoskeletal dysfunction, using massage and stretching techniques to increase flexibility and joint mobility, boost your body’s ability to start its own healing and repair.

We use massage oils, applied directly to your skin, so that your muscles can be warmed, mobilised and eased.  Massage therapy stimulates blood flow and moves lymphatic fluid, supporting the body to eliminate toxins, calming the peripheral nervous system and toning and relaxing muscles.

You may find that stiffness and tension is eased, as tissues repair and you feel calmer.

Massage Therapy is an effective treatment for muscular and skeletal conditions, but is also a wonderful holistic health therapy, supporting your body to be well.
